Geos was the first painting composed using the computer. Like others in the shape series it uses 4 shapes, each designed on the 8x8 pixel grid used in simple alpha-numeric keyboard characters, each character pattern determined by the binary “1 or 0”, on or off. Random numbers determined the color of each block of ‘characters’. This was all written in a BASIC program and printed out in a grid pattern corresponding to the painting’s dimensions, giving a ‘paint by numbers’ guide to the actual hand painting. I selected the shape and colors, red, yellow and blue, for the chromatic row near the center (and also the background and the exact set of greys used for the other shapes).
